Cooking with your children can be so rewarding, fun, and educational. Spending time with your child in the kitchen can be time to bond, and also time to teach them about nutrition and making good food choices. As a mother, I struggle with making good food choices for my kids daily. It is hard! That is why I was thrilled to find out my friend Rachel was hosting kids cooking classes this fall. Rachel is the writer of the blog Hounds in the Kitchen and President of Baying Hound online store. She is the mother of a lovely 4 year old lion impersonator extraordinaire and can add: avid gardener, healthy food prep expert, talented cook, and foodie to her CV. Rachel will be leading cooking with kids classes throughout the month of October at Sprout Soup in Clintonville.
I had a conversation with her about cooking and kids because I consider her an expert on the subject. Rachel said that “cooking with your children teaches them many practical skills: knife handling, cleanliness, caution around fire, and following directions.” In addition to that, guiding your child on how to follow a recipe can help with learning to read and also in developing math skills. Learning with herbs, sugar, butter, and milk sounds like fun to me! “There are more intangible lessons too, such as developing their senses of taste and smell,” said Rachel. And, lastly, and probably most importantly, she highlighted that, “The most important reason to cook with kids is to lay the foundation for a lifelong healthy relationship with food.”
Start that foundation now and join Rachel:
