Cedar Point’s HalloWeekends in Sandusky, OH

Cedar Point, ranked one of the best amusement parks in the world*, brings back fond memories for me. From being little and riding the Scrambler with my Dad, my first roller coaster with my Grandad (he actually screamed, it was hysterical to a tween…heck, even the memory now makes me giggle), and standing in line flirting with boys when I was an older teen. Good times.

The park is great fun, and also is great fun during the month of October. Cedar Point hosts HalloWeekends for those daring enough to walk the midway with a monster. My disclaimer: I have *not* been up during HalloWeekends, but I have spoken with a few moms who have taken their kids and they assure me the monsters are kid-friendly and they had a TERRIFIC time. Use your own discretion.

Cedar Point sent me some pictures that I found scary (in this post), and clearly I am a big chicken, because I showed them to my Sundays with Stretchy Pants buddy’s little 7 year old, and she smiled. She said “nope, those monsters aren’t scary.”

Some families are like my brother’s – he has two high schoolers, one middle schooler, and then a wee preschooler. I know my sister-in-law would have peace of mind knowing there would be plenty of stuff for her youngest to do too, and not have the wits scared out of her. A few moms I asked who had been shared these helpful tidbits, as follows:

1. There is an area that is set up specifically for younger kids and you won’t even know there is other scary stuff around. They have kiddie rides and friendly monsters that aren’t so scary looking. And, of course, the PEANUTS characters. It isn’t Halloween without The Great Pumpkin!! Just ask Linus.

2. Monsters will not come up and scare your child. One mom told me she kept a lookout for the scary ones and turned the kids the other way.

3. The really scary stuff doesn’t happen until sundown, but you don’t have to go in that area. The kids will probably be ready for bed, anyhow.

Reading through all that is offered during HalloWeekends, it truly sounds like a terrifyingly great time. Check out a few of the things they have going on to celebrate:

·         Monster Midway Invasion Celebration:  An extremely popular parade features friendly monsters, amazing floats, giant inflatable games, crazy characters and surprises left and right!

·         Live Shows:  There are six live shows to choose from including the PEANUTS Halloween Show & Kids’ Costume Contest. New this year, kids can also help Queen Meanie find a dragon for her castle in Search for the Hidden Dragon.

·         Family Dining: Make reservations for Boeckling’s Banquet for lunch or dinner inside the grand dining hall of the Eerie Estate. Fun, creepy inhabitants of the old mansion welcome, serve and entertain guests.

·         Magical House on Boo Hill: Kids and parents can step into this magical fun house filled with seven themed rooms and fun surprises around every corner.

·         Hay Bale Maze: Kids will have fun navigating through bales of hay in this pint-sized maze just for them.

Sometimes a day trip such as this one is too much and you want to spend the night, if so check out Cedar Point’s Resorts. If you stay at a resort you get early entry into the park and also discounted tickets. The park is about a two and half hour drive north from Columbus.

Check out Cedar Point’s website for information on admission.

If you plan to go:

  • Pack for your day trip or overnight stay.  Check out Travels With Pirates or Delicious Baby for some great traveling with kids advice.
  • Don’t forget the kids’ costumes. I would want to dress the kids up.
  • This will be a very stimulating environment for the kiddies, be prepared for meltdowns.
  • Age appropriateness. If you feel your kids are too young, don’t take them. There will be plenty of time to enjoy something like this.
  • Don’t forget your camera.
