Going to see BalletMet’s The Nutcracker screams “holidays!” to me. When I was a little girl my Grandmother took my cousin and I to see the ballet, and we just loved it. We got dressed up in our Christmas dresses, went to lunch at the old downtown Lazarus, and then saw the ballet. Thinking back on those times with my Grandmother brings a big smile to my face, and I want my daughter to have the same happy memories of our holidays together.
BalletMet recently hosted an open house where families could get a behind-the-scenes sneak peak of The Nutcracker. For a jar of peanut butter as a donation, we got to see a few of the dances that will be part of the show. Parents and their little ones enjoyed watching the soldiers do their march, the rats being their mischievious little selves, and many other dances. After the dancers finished their pieces, the children were called to the floor to point their toes and pirouette. I loved how interactive this event was! Seeing my daughter and her little friends excited and engaged was wonderful in and of itself. The Sugar Plum Fairy made an appearance and did her beautiful solo holding the attention of even the youngest patron. After her dance, one little girl ran up to give her a hug and then ALL the children mobbed her. It was really cute, but probably a bit frightening for the young dancer.
My daughter was thrilled and wanted to see more. She is only four, but I took her to see The Nutcracker when she was two because I had gotten free tickets. I thought two was a bit too young, but at four I think she’ll be fine. I went ahead and purchased tickets for a girls day with my mom. My girl will wear her Christmas dress just like I did, we will hit lunch, and then enjoy the ballet together – just us ladies. I am so excited.
The show, including intermission, runs about two to two and half hours. The costumes are fantastic, the dancers are so much fun to watch, and the music is beautiful. The Nutcracker is designed to captivate an audience of any age.

I wrote about my family’s experience at Mickey’s Magic Show on Columbus Kids/Kidslinked. It includes some helpful tips on visiting the theater with younger children. You can find it here: A Thrilling Theater Evening With Mickey Mouse.
I’m among that great number of people who are intrigued by the performance Nutcracker. It’s an amazing show that opens the doors of entertainment and enchantment. The last time when attended with my friend, I didn’t believe that time has run the fast way it does. It’s so exciting show.
