The Laurie Berkner Band has a special place in my heart. Her music was the first kiddie CD I picked up at the library when my darling daughter was 5 months old. I was looking for fun kid-friendly music that wasn’t Little Einstein or lullabies – or that electronic synthesized stuff – and I happened to see Berkner doing her Buzz Buzz song on a morning talk show. I immediately did the search/click/reserve for pick-up at my local library. The “Whaddaya Think of That” CD was worn out by the time I returned it.
My fave song on that CD is/was The Doodlebugs, mainly because Seinfeld is referenced in the song and the lyrics are so darn cute. Take a look at me jamming to it with P when she was a baby: Doodlebugs (really, when I need to be reminded of how much of a dork I am I just need to watch this video!).
The Nick Jr. and Jack’s Big Music Show children’s music maven is coming to Columbus. The Laurie Berkner Band will performing ONE show (eek! get your tickets now!) on Sunday, February 13. The show is a little over an hour and has a birthday party theme. I think it is cool how these kids artists allow children to feel as if they are participating; such as at The Wiggles kids bring bones drawn from paper for Wags the Dog and roses for Dorothy the Dinosaur, and at Disney shows the little girls wear their princess frocks and even little boys dress up (it’s Rocky Horror Picture show for the G-rated crowd). For The Laurie Berkner Band performance, kids can wear their own party hat and bring their own birthday cake artwork (visit www.laurieberkner.com to download a picture to color). Here’s showtime info:

Now, we all know how awesome Berkner‘s voice is, her musical talent, and her ability to get kids moving, but she is also just a good ol’ nice person too. Check it out:
The Laurie Berkner Band partners with a charity for each show. Says Laurie, “It’s important for us to give back to the communities we perform in.” Upcoming concerts will benefit Soles4Souls (www.soles4souls.org), an organization that provides shoes to people in need in 125 countries. Families can bring new or gently used children’s shoes to the venues. The shoe drive is sponsored by children’s footwear company Umi.
If you plan to go, please remember a few things:
- Get tickets now. If you can’t make her concert then check out one of the band’s CDs from the library. A new CD is out called “The Best of the Laurie Berkner Band” by Two Tomatoes.
- Bring water or a snack.
- Know where the bathrooms are.
- Be prepared for little ones wanting souvenirs. Make a decision on how that will be handled *before* you go. I am told that CDs, felt party hats, coloring books, t-shirts, and wooden eggs shakers will be sold.
- Nix the stroller. I don’t think I need to explain anything here.
- Remember this is at 1pm – many kids nap at this time that will be there. Be patient.
NO WAY!!! We HAVE to be there! I cannot believe I read this! My daughter who is 7 has loved this woman forever! 🙂
