The apples are on at Lynd Fruit Farm in full force! My friend and I took the kids and picked 30 pounds of McIntosh, Gala and Golden Supreme between us. My plan is to make a mad apple crisp, apple cake, and some apple sauce (without the cinnamon because my kids are crazy!). We will be apple-d out! We didn’t just go for the apples, though. Lynd Fruit Farm has a corn maze and a few fun things for the kids to do, such as a bounce house, barrel rides and other fun play things. In case you don’t know me personally, I LOVE the fall fun days on farms. Just search fall and many of them will come up – I’ll work on putting together a list of the ones we’ve been to over the years.
Lynd’s theme for their maze this year is “Middle Earth,” which was exciting since I am a huge LOTR fan. The maze was pretty awesome, too. We ended up buying tickets to the maze and one barrel ride; because as you know, a child cannot pass up a barrel on wheels pulled by a tractor! The maze was $9/adult and $7/child, 3 and under were free. The barrel ride was $2 for all under 80 pounds. The play areas are more for younger kids (ages 2 – 11…in my opinion), but the maze is great for families. Again, my opinion, but I thought the prices were a bit steep. I paid $27 for the maze and two barrel rides. We were probably in and out of the maze in an hour, and then hung around another 20 minutes for the kids to run around. If you are truly competitive they offer a challenge for the maze – this would certainly add more time to your journey through the “Middle Earth” of corn.
The apples I mentioned are on right now, and some others such as Honeycrisp, Goldrush, and Fuji (my fave!) come on later in September through early November. You’ve got time to pick! Be sure to check out their apple schedule and they also have a chart that shows which apple is best for various things, such as baking, eating, sauce, etc. on the left of their home page.
Fun fact: apples are REALLY good for your lungs. They are a natural way to increase your lung health. Highly recommended in an asthmatic’s diet (I know, because I am one).
More tips:
- Wear sturdy shoes.
- Plan to carry baby. Strollers would be cumbersome.
- Cash, cash, cash – bring more than you think you’ll need.
- Port-o-potties only. Plan accordingly.
- We picnicked off the back of my van in the apple orchard. Fun!
