My love for a spunky little red head with short hair all started when she said she was going to defeat a giant. This little ginger was full of wit, charm, and moxie. Now, she is defeating dragons! No, I do not know her personally…even though I feel as if I do because her character is written so well. Her name is Claudette and she is the main character of graphic novel series The Chronicles of Claudette “Giants Beware!” and the newly published “Dragons Beware!” by Rafael Rosado and Jorge Aguirre.
“Dragons Beware!” came out today, May 12, 2015, and I had the privilege to preview it with my kids. It is a graphic novel with illustrations that bring the characters to life. What I love about both of the graphic novels is there is a female heroine who wouldn’t be complete without her two – well, three if you count the pug (and you HAVE to count the pug!) – sidekicks. They get themselves in situations where they have to fight gargoyles, giants, and dragons!
Graphic novels are such a great way to get kids reading. Children get the chance to not only read the words, but they get pictures to help them out if they aren’t understanding the story line. Plus, fun illustrations can really bring the story alive for children. Think of a graphic novel as a book or novel on steroids. The story is amplified with pictures. I suggest this book for elementary-aged children up to 6th or 7th grade. Struggling or reluctant readers are a perfect audience for a graphic novel, too!
If you and your children liked “Giants Beware!,” you will certainly love “Dragons Beware!” It is full of the same humor and adorable characters. I love how adventurous and suspenseful the books are for my kids. We are huge fans and will look forward to more Chronicles of Claudette in the future.
