Cbusmom Spotlight: La Vanya Watkins

Cbusmom Spotlight: La Vanya Watkins

Ever meet someone and just know they do amazing things? That is the way I felt when I met La Vanya Watkins. La Vanya is a wife, mother, teacher, and helps run Tiger Mushroom Farms (her 7 year old son created it!). She is a mama who deserves the spotlight, so let’s go!

Tell me a little about you.

I am a wife,mother of two children ages 13 (daughter)and 8(son) and a full-time educator in central Ohio.

How do you juggle being a wife, mother, owner of a business and being a full-time professional?

Working full-time and helping our son foster his entrepreneurial skills to expand his business is challenging. Our family works as a team to make things work out as smooth as possible. Some days we’re successful and some days….we just try again the next day.

What is Tiger Mushroom Farms?

Tiger Mushroom Farms is a small family run mushroom farm started by our son. The idea came to him after a Cub Scout project ended. The project was growing basil and cat grass. He wanted to continue growing something after his project ended and he suggested mushrooms. We purchased several varieties to let him experiment and he enjoyed cultivating them and eating them. Soon we grew too many and decided to sell them at the Farmers Market. Many people loved his story and he ended up on several local tv morning shows. He even had a chance to share his business with Steve Harvey on his show.

Tell me about your work with Scouts and how it has made an influence on your children.
My daughter has been a Girl Scout since she joined as a Daisy at 5 years old. Her troop is like family and she has enjoyed all the different opportunities she’s experienced with them. She has learned so much and it has increased her confidence and enhanced her leadership skills. Her troop serves the community by caroling for seniors, volunteering at school events and tutoring younger students. She enjoys helping others and it’s helped her blossom into an exceptional young lady.

My son absolutely loves his pack. He couldn’t wait to join (especially after going to so many Girl Scout meetings). He didn’t want to leave after the 1st meeting! He has participated in the Rain Gutter Regatta twice and he loves preparing his boat and racing. He also enjoyed his camping trip with the Cub Scouts last summer. He went fishing, practiced archery and participated in many other activities.

What is your favorite book?

My favorite book is a Women’s Devotional Bible that a dear friend gave to me many years ago. It contains stories that women can relate to and it’s a great resource for life’s challenges.
